Harassment Training – Are you in compliance?

By January 1, 2021, all California employers with 5 or more employees are required, by law, to provide:

  • One hour of harassment and abusive conduct training to non-supervisory employees, AND
  • Two hours of harassment and abusive conduct prevention training for employees with supervisory authority.

This training must be provided within six-months of hire or promotion, and every two-years thereafter.

Although sexual harassment is the most common type of workplace harassment and the one that gets the most attention, other types of harassment involve race, national origin, religion, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation.

To help employers reduce the burden of complying with the new law, the California Department of Fair Housing (DFEH) has developed online training. This training is available on the DFEH website HERE. Currently, this training is available in both English and Spanish, and there are plans to expand the training in Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Tagalog.

We encourage employers to take advantage of this resource. Once an employee has completed the training, our clients can use the Abacus HCM system to store and maintain the employee’s certificate. The system can also generate reports to notify clients of upcoming expiration dates so that employee certification and training renewals can be scheduled accordingly.
